This class has made me much more aware of all of the social networking and web 2.o opportunities available and I now notice them with a new perspective and appreciation. But I was not prepared for the sheer volume of those opportunities and the plethora of areas that are implementing those strategies. Is it that we are approaching the veritable "Tipping Point" when a phenomenon, through the influence of specific people and groups, becomes a much larger part of the culture?
Part of this thought is my new perspective but it seems that all sorts of areas are now using the web 2.0 that would never had in the past. NASA just announced a Twitter feed on the current space mission, singer John Mayer is releasing his next single song on Twitter, the web is loaded with new RSS feeds, and every time you watch a local news cast there is an opportunity to get live updates.
Many of these tools have been around for a while (Facebook, Twitter etc)but were relegated to a sub group and not quite mainstream. Maybe this is my new awareness but it seems that it is becoming pervasive and ready to explode into all aspects of our culture. It will be interesting to continue to explore the technology but also it's impact on our culture.

Good question/thought Jay. Do you think that you are more aware of the tools (Twitter especially) now because of the class and b/c you have an account. CNN, Entertainment Tonight, Action News, etc. have been "Tweeting" for a couple of years now (along with most other TV shows)....but it wasn't until I actually had an account that I really noticed the tool and engaged in its use!
ReplyDeleteJay, such a good point. It used to be that posting to Twitter &/or following blogs were thought to be for the "techies". As these communication tools continue to infiltrate all aspects of our lives, more people are becoming intrigued. My husband, who can be classified as non-techie, is interested in Twitter now after hearing it mentioned repeatedly on ESPN and Sports Center!
ReplyDeleteI think that there are many "first time" uses of the tool, i.e. NASA and new converts to the medium, that it is reaching into more universally accepted usage in our culture. While Twitter and RSS feeds have been avialable, I'm not sure the "masses" had adopted or appreciated their application, hence my question of the "tipping point" having either just been passed or is it approaching. One of the indications for me has been the location and size of the Twitter, Facebook and RSS feed symbols being placed by advertisers. It seems as though the symbols were relegated to small corners of web pages but now they are prominately placed in advertisements, print media and given increased exposure on web pages. To me that might be an indication of the importance or power ascribed to them by advertising agencies and their clients.
ReplyDeleteI have been following NASA on twitter for a few months now, and I love the updates they post. Being able to follow Nicole Stott while she stayed on the space station was amazing!!! It is nice to feel connected to them in some way.
